Friday, June 10, 2016 Is International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD), all over the World!
When: June 10, 2016 – International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD)
What: On June 10, 51 countries on six continents will join together to bring awareness to safety at railroad grade crossings. Join North Carolina in helping spread this safety message by participating in Chalk One Up for Safety.
Who: Calling groups of students (suggested ages 7-13) to participate in a contest chalking rail safety messages in your community. Groups of students can be any size but must be sponsored by a nonprofit organization with an adult to act as an advisor/supervisor. In order to keep group sizes manageable, organizations may sponsor more than one group. Participating organizations must be nonprofits and located in North Carolina.
How: Find a piece of sidewalk, asphalt or concrete in your community that is at least five feet by five feet (5’x5’). (In case of bad weather, you can use a piece of sheetrock.) Utilize chalk to design a rail safety message. Message should focus on one of the following:
Look, Listen, Live (www.oli.org for more information)
Always expect a train! (www.oli.org for more information)
Where: Online! Take a photo of your organization’s creation and submit it to Operation Lifesaver of North Carolina via Facebook. To enter the photos participants must tag North Carolina Operation Lifesaver (www.facebook.com/Operation-Lifesaver-of-North-Carolina) and use the hashtag #NCChalkOneUp2016. Create your chalk drawing anytime, but photos must be submitted between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m.on June 10, 2016 to be considered for the contest. You can also submit photos by email to [email protected]
Prizes: What is a contest without prizes? The top 5 entries will be selected by our panel of judges. The top 5 entries will then be placed on our Facebook page for a public vote. The number of “likes” each entry receives will be combined with the judge’s score to determine winners. Prizes will be given for First, Second, and Third place. In addition, posters of the top entries will be featured in the Rail Safety Booth at the North Carolina State Fair.
Pre-register: Pre-register your organization to receive fun Operation Lifesaver safety information (activity books, safety information) and swag for your organization. To preregister fill out this form and submit via email to [email protected] or by mail to Margaret Cannell, State Coordinator, North Carolina Operation Lifesaver, 1500 Carson Street, Suite 108, Raleigh, NC 27608. Pre-registration must be received by June 3 to receive OL gear. Fine Print:
Cash prize money will be issued to the sponsoring organization. The organization should be a non-profit organization – for example a Boy Scout Troop, a 4-H club, a little league team, church youth group or the like.
To create your chalk design you may use any kind of chalk you wish but please limit your project to chalk.
Designs will be judged on both artistic quality and how well they convey the safety message selected by the group.
By entering the contest you are granting North Carolina Operation Lifesaver permission to use photos and designs on our webpage, social media feeds, and other promotional pieces.
Each group of students must have an advisor/supervisor who is at least 18 years of age or older to participate in the contest.
For liability reasons, individual minors should not appear in the photos submitted for the contest. Photos that include images of minors will not be utilized as part of the contest.
Judges will score all entries on a scale of 1-10. The top five will be determined by averaging the judge’s scores.
The top five will be opened to a Facebook vote. Votes will be counted as “likes”. Voting will be open for five days – June 15-June 19. The winners will be announced on our Facebook page on June 20.
